STUDY GROUP FOR MUSICS OF EAST ASIA
MISSION STATEMENT
MISSION
The mission of the Study Group is to provide a forum for ICTM members from all parts of the world who share an interest in the music of East Asia, broadly defined musically and geographically, including East Asian music in the diaspora as well as indigenous, transplanted, and syncretic music within East Asian countries. Other performing arts related to music will also be part of the subjects of study.
BACKGROUND
At the 38th Conference of the International Council for Traditional Music, held in Sheffield, August 2005, scholars from various East Asian countries discussed the need for a study group for musicologists working on East Asian musics. Following this discussion and subsequent email correspondences, a conference on East Asian Music and Modernity was held from August 31 to September 2, 2006 in I-Lan, Taiwan, with over 100 participants and 34 paper presenters from Taiwan, Korea, Japan, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, England, the USA, Austria, the Netherlands, and elsewhere. During a roundtable meeting at this conference, those present agreed to submit a proposal to the ICTM requesting to form a study group. The program committee members and two co-opted members were commissioned to serve as an interim Executive Board. This includes ten members from various countries, with Ying-fen Wang chosen as the Acting Liaison Officer; procedures for formal elections will be established before the Study Group’s next meeting.
It was decided at this meeting that the Study Group will be as inclusive as possible and welcomes members from all regions. However, it also has a special mission to increase communication and interaction among scholars working in East Asia. The musics of East Asia have long been established in practice and study. However, many scholars in Asia, otherwise worthy researchers in their native fields, are hindered by language difficulties and may therefore refrain from attending international conferences. This lack of participation on the international stage has inadvertently led to an overlooking of indigenous East Asian scholarly research on music. The formation of the Study Group will hopefully address these issues, provide a friendly and low-pressure environment for East Asian scholars to present their work in English, and encourage greater exchanges of ideas both within East Asia and between scholars in the region and those elsewhere. Special efforts will also be made to encourage student participation.
