The work Black and White Stonesis inspired by the artificial intelligence program AlphaGo battled Go World Champion Lee Sedolthis is the second time humans are defeated by artificial intelligence. My intention to create this work was deriving from the Game of Go, to put forth the questions concerning Artificial intelligence that we are currently subjected to.The whole piece’s sound is filled with collisions of accidentals and non-accidentals, with major third intervals (representing human) running from beginning to the end. The black and white keys of the piano representing the black and white stones of Go, the 19 straight lines and the 361 intersections are used as base figures for rhythm. The basic movement type of Go like "diagonal", "nobi", "jump", "hiraki", "knight's move", "large knight's move", "extend" etc. are also reflected as sounds movement in this piece. The intention of the composer is to raise awareness of an unavoidable challenge the human race is facing now and trigger some impulse when we are meditating about the human and machine relationship. The work „Black and White Stones“ is inspired by the Chinese strategy board game „围棋“ („weiqi“), also called „“ (yi) in ancient China, and known in the West by the name of „Go“. The game of Go is played using a square-shaped board and stones in the colours of black and white. The Go-board consists of a grid made by 19 lines, each vertically and horizontally, thus creating 361 intersection points for the Go-stones to be placed on. The game of Go contains the abundant culture of the Han-Chinese ethnic group and embodies Chinese culture and civilization, its complex and fickle change, and is also considered to be the world’s most complicated board game. Yet, in this year’s month of March, the artificial intelligence program AlphaGo, developed by Google’s DeepMind company, battled Go World Champion Lee Sedol, a professional Go-player of 9 dan rank, and triumphed with an end score of 4:1. Following the defeat in chess, this is the second time humans are defeated by artificial intelligence. The result of this match also initiated further discussion over artificial intelligence, with many believing that our world is performing another round of industry change. However, this kind of change horrifies quite a few people - at the moment, various kinds of scenarios of artificial intelligence threatening mankind are omnipresent. The famous physicist Stephen Hawking says: „The short-term effects of Artificial Intelligence depend on who is controlling it, whereas the long-term impact of Artificial Intelligence hinges on whether it can be controlled. (…) When he technological development of Artifiial Intelligence has reached its peak level, we are going to face either the best of the worst thing for humanity.“ He even asserts, that „the development of full Artificial Intelligence could spell the end of the human race“.

My intention to create this work was, deriving from the Game of Go, to put forth the questions concerning Artificial intelligence that we are currently subjected to. This work uses 19 letters to arrange the themes of „Alphago“ and „human“, and, based on the first 19 moves of the first match between Alphago and Lee Sedol, obtains the corresponding note arrangement.

The whole piece’s sound is filled with collisions of accidentals and non-accidentals, with major third intervals running from beginning to the end, the black and white keys of the piano representing the black and white stones of Go, the 19 straight lines, the 361 intersections,

The intention behind creating this work is to express the societal issues we are all paying attention to, and to use this work to trigger society’s reflection.
